On Sunday, April 1 was Samuel's first birthday! We woke him up singing "Happy Birthday." It was General Conference that day so we made a big breakfast before we watched a session. We let Sam open one gift in the morning. He loves to take baths, so Ainsley gave him a Little People boat that he could play with in the bath. Then while Tom made breakfast, Ainsley and Sam took a bath. I think Ainsley liked playing with the boat more than Sam, but he did like that the cap that creates a rain spout. He kept holding it over his head and laughing as it rained down on him.His birthday was a relaxing, fun day at home as a family. We bought some balloons and blew them up. He enjoyed playing with them the whole day. After breakfast, we downloaded and watched the Saturday afternoon session of General Conference since it had been so late to watch it Live the night before. Then we had lunch, and took naps. I made Sam a birthday cake from scratch...unfortunately the first one didn't work out...I hadn't creamed the sugar and butter very well. We don't have any electrical appliances so I had to do it by hand and hadn't let the butter thaw long enough. It turned out really dense and gooey. So I dumped it in the garbage and made a new one using a different recipe. It was just a simple white cake with vanilla and chocolate frosting. We called Tom's family over Skype and they watched us sing "Happy Birthday." Then we let Sam dig into his own little cake. He loved it. He got pretty messy. So he got to take a second bath for the day...which he loved!
After he got cleaned up, we watched the another session of General Conference on the internet. During the songs, Sam opened up the rest of his presents. He got a small German police car, semi-truck with scenes of Hildesheim on it, a Grizzly bear figure, tiger figure, and a new hat. Both grandparents also sent him a package but they hadn't arrived yet, so he'll get more presents in a few days:)
Happy Birthday Sam! This year has flown by! I can't believe you are already one years old. You are such a happy baby and and we can't imagine life with out you. You make us laugh and smile everyday. We love you!

The day was kinda hard for Ainsley-you can tell from two of the pictures with her in it that she's not too happy about what's going on. This is the first time she's had a sibling celebrate a birthday. She didn't like the idea that he got presents and not her. There were a few tears because she would take all of the toys and then get mad when we would remind her that it was "his new toy" and she needed to ask him if she could play with it. We kept reminding her that it was her birthday next month and she'll get presents too.
Sam was tired of me trying to make him wear his birthday hat. When I put it on him, he started screaming.

What a handsome little guy!
He is such a doll. Happy Birthday Sam!
Holy cow, he is getting so big! He looks so much older now and it's fun to see him on his knees. I did notice that Ainsley wasn't too happy in a couple of pictures - she'll forget all about it in a month when it's her turn. :-) Happy Birthday Sam!
